Noteworthy practitioners of drumming who also have pipes. Paper Lace with Philip Wright, Ozark Mountain Daredevils with Larry Lee, Jigsaw with Des Dyer, and of course Karen Carpenter, though she’s away from the set in this performance.
The era of guitar great Terry Kath was tragically short-lived. Chicago was never quite the same after Kath’s accidental death. Even Jimi Hendrix lauded the guitarist. Check out his extraordinary solo on 25 or 6 to 4.
After Terry Kath’s death, Donnie Dacus assumed lead guitar duties, and performed admirably. He can be seen in action on I’ve Been Searching For So Long, a memorable Peter Cetera showpiece. The song was written by trombonist James Pankow.
The band encompasses many styles, and pieces from their body of work are often sublime. Cetera and keyboardist/vocalist Robert Lamm, along with Kath and drummer Danny Seraphine, were the core elements. In addition, their horn section is legendarily renowned. In short, they can get the job done for ya.
This work-in-progress focuses on the oft humourous interactions between dogs and humans, dogs and other dogs, and sometimes just between dog and his/her…art. We begin with Olive and Mabel, the two stalwarts of BBC sportscaster Andrew Cotter. Also included are Runty the pianist/vocalist, Winston the French bulldog, and a singing husky.
The Kinks.
A primer that is {somewhat} epic in its brevity. Some very powerful music from The Love Dimension, Spiritualized, The Zombies, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Lemon Drops,The Paupers, The Charlatans, Weird Herald, Vamp, andBongwater, featuring Ann Magnuson.
Addendum: now includes the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and Neo Maya.
And: Toy, Ten Years After, and Baby Grandmothers. And Wooden Shjips. And Carlton Melton. Yo. Plus The Seeds.
And! Rain Parade!
The Wicker Man, an extraordinary, curious, classic cult film, debuted in 1973 and has only gained in popularity since. The movie stars Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt, and a host of locals from the small Scottish towns where it was filmed. So many indelible moments. Lee’s playful yet imposing rendering of Lord Summerisle is the sine qua non of this iconic motion picture.
Withnail and I {1987}.
The 1987 film Withnail and I, written and directed by Bruce Robinson, and starring Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, and Richard Griffiths, has come to be recognized as one of the great achievements of British film-making. Originally considered a “cult” movie, this poignant and amazingly humorous film is so very memorable. This happened to be Grant’s first film, as well, putting him firmly on the map of such things.
The extraordinary film Manhunter, filmed in 1986, features auteur-like vision by director Michael Mann, and memorable performances by Tom Noonan, Brian Cox, and William Petersen. Based on the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, Manhunter possesses an eerie noir-ness, focuses often on the similarities between hunter and hunted, and resonates powerfully to this day.
Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees created some of the most mesmerizing music of their era. Generally described as Post-punk or Goth, they really defied such categorizations. Either that, or they *defined* them. But, let’s not argue. The “Revolver” video is from the Peter Cook show of the same name; the tune is Hong Kong Garden.
What can one say, at this point, about Mr. Dylan? This post represents but a minute handful of personal favorites composed and performed by one of the great artists of our time. His idiosyncratic, poetic, often cryptic and/or surreal lyrics changed the course of Music history; of that there is simply no doubt. The subsequent and current musical landscapes simply would not exist without him.
